Building a Campfire

Believe it or not, a campfire is not an easy thing to build, it may even take several matches to light. Don't be discouraged, here's how we find we keep the fire going...

  • Clear away any leaves or debris at least five feet away from the fire pit.
  • Keep a bucket of water and a poking stick on hand.
  • Keep all firewood and anything flammable away from the campfire.

You will need fire starter (can be lint from your dryer at home), kindling wood (small sticks) and logs

Your fire needs air to light. Therefore, we find that the best way to build a campfire is to build an A frame structure.

  • Place the tinder on the bottom
  • Place the kindling wood on top of the tinder in a crisscross pattern
  • Place your logs over the kindling in an A frame patter

Light the tinder. You may need to blow on the tinder to get some more air in there to light the kindling and logs. If the fire doesn't seem to be moving beyond the kindling, try taking a paper plate and waving it at the fire (again, adding air to it).

Most of all, make sure that the campfire is attended to at all times!
